Student Accident Reports and Insurance

Student Accident Reports

As per AP 315 - Illness/Injury at School, Division staff are expected to act as a reasonable parent would in the even a student becomes injured at school or during a school sponsored activity.

Should an accident occur, a Student Accident Report must be filled out in EdForms within 24 hours of the accident occurring. The Student Accident Report must have every section completed, must be signed by the school Principal and then reviewed and accepted by the Administrative Assistant - Business & Finance before being considered complete.

Student Accident Insurance

The Division carries blanket student accident insurance through Industrial Alliance, which provides coverage during the school day and while travelling to and from school and for school-sponsored activities.

Please see the form letter below. This letter should be sent out to parents/guardians, along with the Accident Reimbursement Claim Forms (which are attached to the letter), whenever a student has an accident and is injured at school or during a school-sponsored activity. This letter provides the parent/guardian with information about the insurance coverage and instructions on how to fill out the form. In the event that a student is injured at school, it is important that the parent/guardian submit the form within the required timelines.

For any serious student accidents where the student was injured at school or at a school activity, where the student was taken to see a medical professional due to the injury, please ensure that you email the Student Accident Insurance Letter and Claim Form (see attached) to the parent/guardian. Please copy Camille Hendrickson when the letter and claim form are sent to the parent/guardian.

Please note that glasses repair/replacement is only covered if the glasses are damaged as a result of an injury at school or at a school-sponsored event.

The Blanket Student Accident insurance also covers school-based employees if they are injured at school. However, any employees who are covered under WCB (i.e. administrators, counsellors, CTS teachers, non-certificated staff, etc.) must first report any accidents to WCB through the OH&S Advisor, Darren Bursey, prior to accessing this insurance coverage.

It's important to note that the Division's insurance is second payer. The student or employee must always first access coverage under their own medical insurance (i.e. ASEBP for employees).

As a reference document on what is covered under this plan, we have created a Blanket Student Accident Insurance Plan Coverage Summary This is an internal document. Please do not send it out to parents/guardians.

Please contact the Administrative Assistant - Business & Finance, Camille Hendrickson, should you have any questions.
